Press Release - 11 October 2006

Local company enters high stakes ‘Dragon’s Den’

A new technology company based in the University of Bath in Swindon’s business acceleration centre will showcase to 150 venture capitalists at a prestigious investors’ event in London (Monday 16 October).

Visual Information is one of 20 companies selected by an expert panel of investors and experienced entrepreneurs and is the first at the annual event to have a female CEO. It provides mapping software and services to business managers, helping them to identify new opportunities and improve resource planning. Fifteen blue-chip companies have already signed up to the software.

The Investors’ Showcase, run by the SETsquared Partnership, is one of the highest regarded and most successful events of its kind. The partnership is a collaboration of the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey to advance enterprise and entrepreneurship in southern England.

The event is the culmination of a programme of support provided by the partnership for local high tech, high growth-potential companies and entrepreneurs, including business mentoring, guidance and office space. During the day selected companies will present their business plans to venture capitalists from across the UK.

Lynette Morrison, Managing Director of Visual Information, set up the company in 2001 with her father and will seek investment of £400,000 to develop its sales & marketing, having recently secured £400,000 from a female-focused venture fund.

Phil Merrick, manager of the University of Bath in Swindon’s Innovation Centre where Visual Information is based, said: “Companies at the showcase are heralded as some of the most exciting new technology investment opportunities in the UK, so we are really delighted that Swindon is a part of that.”

“Our growing presence in business incubation in the south-west means we attract more and more opportunities from our research base and the wider region, which puts us in a great position to recommend companies to investors.”

Visual Information joined the Swindon Innovation Centre in 2005 and has used its services to full effect. Ms Morrison said: “We were assigned a mentor early on who has been brilliant in helping us get the business into shape, complete the business plan and refine our pitch. Without him we wouldn't be half way to raising the funding.

“The SETsquared partnership is very well connected in the investment community and does as much as it can to support its companies. The offices give us an affordable place to work and we have excellent support from its staff.”

Of the 20 companies attending the event, a further five of them are from the University of Bath Innovation Centre.
