New search engine based on Google launched on University website

The University has today formally launched a new search engine system for its website which is based on Google technology.

The Google Search Appliance offers a very powerful search facility with an intuitive interface which will be familiar to anyone who has used the Google search engine. In addition the in-house version can also allow search results to be sorted by date as well as relevance.

The search facility was added to the site earlier this month as a trial, but today it becomes the primary way for people to search the University’s site.

Other functionality will be introduced over time, including department-specific searching, the ability to highlight important information and provide detailed usage reports.

The improved search engine is part of a strategy by BUCS and the Department of Marketing & Communications to enhance and develop the website.
