Bishop of Swindon visits Oakfield

The Bishop of Swindon, the Right Reverend Lee Rayfield, met staff running community, arts and learning projects when he visited the University of Bath in Swindon on Tuesday 14 November.

Dr Faith Butt, Director of the Oakfield campus, introduced Bishop Lee to people running projects and courses in the Business Hub, the Centre for Lifelong Learning, and the Western Vocational Lifelong Learning Network.

The Business Hub runs a range of programmes and seminars to support local businesses, including a Women into Enterprise programme giving women training, support and networking opportunities to set up their own business.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning runs a broad programme of part-time educational and leisure courses, including archaeology, art & design and IT.

Earlier in the year its Creative Arts & Advice Week for adults gave local people the opportunity to find out about life as an adult learner. Many are now going on to study in higher education.

The Western Vocational Lifelong Learning Network is part of a national initiative to broaden access to vocational higher education for all ages. It brings together representatives from higher education institutions across the northern half of the South West and is based at Oakfield

Bishop Lee has a PhD in immunology and sits on the UK Gene Therapy Advisory Committee which advises the government on clinical research in the field of gene therapy.

He is also a member of the Society of Ordained Scientists, a group of people who seek to connect the Church with the worlds of science and technology.
