Press Release - 10 February 2006

The storytelling of Winnie the Pooh illustrator, E H Shepard

Best known for his images of Winnie the Pooh, E H Shepard was one of the leading illustrators of the early 20th century. Local people will have the opportunity to learn about his place in the history of storytelling at a free public lecture on Wednesday 15 February at the University of Bath.

Cleo Witt, Education Officer at the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath, will be talking about Ernest Shepard’s life, his role in the history of illustration, and his less well known illustrations for the magazine Punch, where he worked for many years.

Shepard, born in London in 1879, was told by his parents to always carry a notebook and a pencil wherever he went. His notebooks, spanning 79 years, are now part of a Shepard exhibition at the University of Surrey. He joined Punch in 1921 and was asked to illustrate children’s verses written by AA Milne. In 1930 he drew the illustrations for Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows.

“Shepard had a lifelong interest in narrative,” said Cleo, “and the delicacy of his line creates an extraordinarily sympathetic image, which instinctively appeals to children.

Cleo has been Education Officer at the Holburne Museum of Art since 1998, before which she was Keeper of Decorative Art. She is a classicist who trained as a textile conservator then moved into museum curating. She is a Fellow of the Museums Association.

Admission is free, and people can just turn up on the evening. Free parking available in the West Car Park. All lectures run from 5.15pm until 6.15pm in the lecture hall 8 West 1.1 on the Claverton campus.
