Internal News - 10 March 2006

The University welcomes its new Chair of Council

The University is very pleased to announce that Mr Peter Troughton has been appointed Chair of the University of Bath Council.

Educated at Radley and Trinity College, Cambridge, Mr Troughton served in HM Diplomatic Service and then joined WHSmith. He became Managing Director of WHSmith News and later joined the main board as Managing Director responsible for WHSmith Retail and its subsidiaries, Waterstones, Virgin and Our Price Music, leaving in 1995.

Between 1995 and 2004 Mr Troughton worked in the financial services industry, first as Deputy Chairman of Rothschild Asset Management and then from 2000 as Chief Executive of First Arrow Investment Management, retiring in 2004. He is a non-executive director of Archant Ltd, a privately held regional newspaper company, and the Lowland Investment Trust plc.

A former Trustee of the National Gallery, Mr Troughton is a trustee of the Rothschild Foundation, the National Gallery Trust and the Royal Opera House Endowment Fund.

As Chair of the Council, Mr Troughton is responsible for leadership of the Council as the governing body of the University and ultimately to stakeholders for its effectiveness. He will play a key role in the business of the University (including the chairing of meetings of Council and two of its Committees) but not in the day-to-day executive management, which is the responsibility of the Vice-Chancellor. He will act as an ambassador for the University, promoting its activities in the wider community, in particular, assisting with fund-raising projects and will represent Council both externally and at events of the University (such as the Awards Ceremonies).
