RIS Week: Super-efficient motors offer chance to cut carbon emissions

A super-efficient motor developed by researchers working in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has caught the eye of the Carbon Trust as a way of reducing carbon emissions.

The electric motor, which can be used in fans, cooling systems and other fixed-speed applications, offers significant operational cost savings over even the most efficient induction motors, without the need for expensive power electronics.

It is thought that around 50 per cent of all electricity is used by electric motors of this kind, and the 3 per cent efficiency saving made by the new motor, developed by Professor Dave Rodger and colleagues, could go some way to meeting demands for reducing carbon emissions.

Research and Innovation Services worked with Professor Rodger to protect the invention with a patent application, and, using its own Enterprise Development Fund, develop a proof-of-concept demonstrator.

This has enabled the University to show potential licensees the simplicity and effectiveness of the design and enlist the support of the ANGLE-Carbon Trust Incubator, who are advising on the commercial strategy.

The announcement coincides with RIS Week (20-24 March), a campaign to raise awareness of the department which is the bridge between the University and business.

The Research and Innovation Services department is responsible for research collaboration, marketing university expertise & research, providing enterprise education & training, and creating new university companies.

As part of a campaign to raise awareness of their department, the Research and Innovation Services team will be exhibiting in the Claverton Rooms everyday this week between 12noon and 2pm.
