University "very pleased" to be placed in top ten by The Guardian

The University of Bath is "very pleased" to be placed in the top ten of UK universities by the latest Guardian newspaper league tables, printed today.

Its ninth ranking is a rise of four places from the University’s13th position in the last year’s tables, and means the University is the highest-placed in the south west region.

In ten subject areas Bath is placed in the top ten of the UK universities, including first in Social Work, second in Sports Science and fourth in Mathematics.

The Guardian’s table deals mainly with how well a university educates its students. Its criteria for judging a university are the performance of its staff, the amount spent per student, the student/staff ratio, the students’ job prospects, students’ degree performance, their A level entry grades and the university’s performance in widening access to education.

A University of Bath spokesperson said: “We are very pleased to be placed in the top ten of UK universities – this is recognition of the emphasis that we place on excellent teaching to give our students the best start in their careers.”

The Guardian says of the University of Bath: “The emphasis here is on careers: most courses are vocational and take four years, with a year in placement.

“The employment rate is good – six months after graduating in 2004, only 6 per cent of Bath students were unemployed.

“Bath is one of the top universities for sports. The friendly campus is located on a hill overlooking the historic city.”

Of the Social Work courses at Bath, it says: “A small intake, low drop-out rate and good links with industry have helped to keep the University of Bath at the top of the table for social work.

“A good relationship with local social work agencies has also meant that graduates who choose to stay in the area after completing their degrees often find work very quickly.”

The full list of subjects where the University was placed in the top ten is: Architecture; Business and Management Studies; Economics; Electrical Engineering; Mathematics; Pharmacy and Pharmacology; Social Policy and Administration; Social Work; Sociology; Sports Science.
