Graduates helping current students through University

A special fund set up by former students at the University of Bath has paid for two scholarships for current students in the department where they studied.

Philip Mountifield and Nathan Dumont, both 19, are studying in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and have each received £1,000 scholarships.

The Hertzian Fund, which pays for the scholarships, was set up through donations made by former students who meet at ‘alumni’ gatherings.

The scholarships are designed to promote academic excellence at the University and are awarded to first year students for their A-level (or equivalent) results and performance during the first semester of study.

Philip Mountifield, who is originally from Winchester, says he is delighted to win the scholarship, and will put the money towards his studies.

“I have been working on a project which involved creating a small vehicle which can sense the magnetic field around a wire and follow it around a track, round corners and also up and down hills,” said Philip.

“Thanks to the scholarship I have been able to purchase some new tools and equipment which has meant that we now have a very good and fast vehicle.”

Nathan Dumont, originally from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, said: "I was surprised but delighted to receive the award. The money will help me to avoid having to get a job during term time, which will allow me more study time."

Professor John Taylor, Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, said: “We are proud that our graduates wish to maintain their association with the department, even though for some of them it is nearly 40 years since they left the University."
