ICIA presents DanceSCAPES

Staff, students and the local community are invited to attend a major photography exhibition featuring dancers from across the south west, which is on display at ICIA Art Space 1 & 2, from 17 July till 13 October 2006. (Preview 5.30-7.30pm)

DanceSCAPES is a unique photography exhibition specially commissioned by Dance South West and Arts Council England South West and is shown as part of the Big Dance 2006, a national celebration of dance across the UK between 15 & 23 July 2006.

Leading photographer, Kevin Clifford, was invited to combine the beauty of the West Country with the imagination and talent of the region’s most creative dance artists. Nineteen dancers suggested by the local agencies of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Swindon, Gloucester and Bristol, under the guidance of Dance South West, took part in the project.

ICIA at the University of Bath is the only venue in the South West to exhibit the full series of photographs in both its galleries, Art Space 1 & 2, running from 17 July to 13 October.

The aim of the exhibition is to explore and investigate the landscape of the West Country through a dancer’s eyes using shape, shadow and light to create dynamic images that challenge our perception of dance.

Originally unveiled at the British Dance Editions in Leeds earlier this year these photographs established Kevin’s reputation as a photographer who brings the dancer’s perspective to the fore of his work.

His process of working allows each dancer to ‘own’ the space first and be photographed second. The only brief was that the environments chosen should be places of significance for each artist.

The landscapes, therefore, reflect many things: a dancer’s childhood, family, holidays, places that have inspired works. The spaces the dancers occupy are personal and meaningful. Thus the resulting photographs demonstrate a narrative unique to each dancer.

After more than 30 years as a photographer, Kevin Clifford now specialises in the arts. Based in the West Country he works closely with most of the major dance companies, dancers, contemporary craftsmen and their funding bodies.

ICIA promotes dance performances, commissions new work and runs dance workshops and classes for all levels.

Exhibition: ICIA Art Space 1 & 2, 17 July – 13 October, open weekdays: 10am-5pm

Exhibition Preview: Monday 17 July, 5.30-7.30pm ICIA Art Spaces 1 & 2. All welcome
