Tess Ridge wins SPA's best newcomer award

Dr Tess Ridge, from the Department of Social and Policy Sciences, has been presented with the ‘Best Newcomer’ award from the Social Policy Association (SPA).

Best newcomers are within five years of their doctorates, and the award is to recognise an exceptional contribution to social policy research.

Professor Saul Becker, Chair of the SPA, presented the award at the 2006 Annual Conference (held at the University of Birmingham last week), and highlighted Tess’s innovative work on child poverty, which takes a child-centred approach.

Her book on this topic, published by Policy Press in 2002, has been widely praised and very influential.

Tess has been an ESRC Research Fellow in the Centre for the Analysis of Social Policy here at Bath for the past three years and was recently appointed to a lectureship.

The SPA is a professional association open for membership to academics and practitioners working in social policy, and to others with an interest in UK and international social policy.
