Ivor Powell celebrates 90th birthday

Staff and students at the University are invited to help football coach Ivor Powell – one of the great characters of British football – to celebrate his 90th birthday on Wednesday (5 July).

Ivor, a former Welsh international footballer, has coached at the University of Bath for more than 30 years, where he still takes an active role in coaching.

He played for Queen’s Park Rangers, Aston Villa and Blackpool during his illustrious playing career, as well as making 14 appearances for Wales. He was also trainer/coach of Don Revie’s great Leeds United side, where he coached players like Jackie Charlton, Billy Bremner and Norman Hunter.

Ivor, who is now assistant coach, has presented one of his Welsh international shirts to the University of Bath’s Sports Department. It has been framed and will take pride of place in the Sports Training Village boardroom. The unveiling will take place at Wednesday’s party.

Sports Department staff, along with staff and students past and present, will join Ivor at a surprise birthday party in the boardroom at the Sports Training Village.

Tea and cake will be served between 1pm and 2pm on Wednesday. Anyone who would like to attend the party can contact Lisa Ashcroft in advance on L.D.Ashcroft@bath.ac.uk

Please note, the party is a surprise, so if you know Ivor, please don’t mention it to him.
