The Raven

Press Release - 23 August 2006

Head to the pub for a chat about science

A Bath pub is set to become the location of the country’s latest Science Cafe – an initiative that aims to bring science out of the laboratory and into the community.

As part of an ongoing series of monthly events, the Raven in Queen Street will host some of the country’s leading scientists who will talk informally about their research over a pint.

Other speakers will include those involved in the practical application of new technologies as well as people in the media and politics concerned with science and technology issues.

The events are free and no previous scientific knowledge is expected. The first meeting will be held on 11 September and will focus on the science behind the national ID card debate.

“The idea of the Science Cafe is to give people the chance to talk about important areas of science in a relaxed and friendly environment,” said Rod Scott, a University of Bath scientist and one of the Cafe organisers.

“We will bring top scientists to the pub to talk about their areas of expertise – some of which will be fairly controversial topics.

“We want to take a critical look at the science, and hope that people will ask awkward questions and come to their own conclusions about issues that matter to them.”

The informal talks usually last about 25 minutes and the discussion – after a break to refill glasses – about an hour.

There are already around 40 Science Cafes in towns and cities throughout the UK, in places ranging from the Orkney Islands to Exeter.

The meetings will be held in The Raven’s upstairs bar, which is non-smoking. No tickets or reservations are required—just turn up at 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start.

Organisers will ask for a small voluntary donation to cover travel costs for the speakers.
