Academic fosters links with Japan

John Fossey from the Department of Chemistry has been appointed as an associate of the executive committee of the UK Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) alumni association.

The JSPS funds scientific research in Japan and each year invites a number of foreign researchers to Japan on various fellowships. Before taking up his post at the University of Bath, Dr Fossey was a JSPS postdoctoral research fellow at Tokyo University in Professor S. Kobayashi’s laboratories.

The JSPS has set up a number of alumni associations in countries around the world to foster collaborations and help maintain scientific relationships between previous fellows and the Japanese scientific community.

Earlier this month, Dr Fossey attended the AGM of the UK JSPS alumni association at the House of Lords in London where he was confirmed as a new member of the executive committee.

“I am very proud to be associated with the JSPS, a forward thinking science organisation that prides itself on bottom-up funding and support of science,” said Dr Fossey.

“The Department of Chemistry at Bath has a strong international ethos and has developed strong links with Japan over the years, which this role will allow me to build upon and strengthen.

“I am keen to establish the University as a key South West regional point of contact for Anglo-Japanese exchange, and would love to hear from any JSPS alumni working at the University.”
