New guidelines on web design are issued

A guide to web design for University departments has been published by Marketing & Communications.

The guide sets out the new visual identity for web pages, giving details of the general design, fonts, colours and layout. (See Related Links).

The guidelines were called for in a web strategy agreed by Executive late last year. Further guidelines and policies on writing for the web, the legal requirements of publishing on the web and on usability will also be published soon.

The design guidelines will need to be followed when departments’, centres’ or units’ sites are redesigned or when new sites are created. All University departments will move to the new look over the next two years or so.

"The guidelines form an important part in ensuring greater consistency in appearance of pages on our website,” said the University’s Head of Communications, Tony Trueman.

"It’s important for departments to apply the guidelines should they decide to change their site’s appearance, or create new websites for centres or units. This will save extra work in having to redesign their pages in the future if they don’t meet the guidelines now."

Departments should contact the Web Team if in doubt about how to apply the guidelines. Departments, centres or units wanting to move their site to the new look in the near future should also contact the Web Team.
