Press Release - 22 January 2007

Small businesses to get expert help at breakfast seminar

People running small and medium-sized businesses can find out about sources of funding, grants and investment opportunities, at a breakfast seminar organised by the University of Bath in Swindon.

The event takes place from 7.30am to 10.30am on Friday 26 January in Carpenter House, Broad Quay, Bath. The main speaker will be Philip Tellwright, the Network Director of The South West Angel and Investor Network (SWAIN).

SWAIN connects private investors, or 'business angels', with companies looking for investment, and Mr Tellwright has a comprehensive understanding of investment into the small and medium-sized firms.

For the past twenty years he has worked in four varied senior financial roles in the south west as a professional investor, corporate finance advisor and finance director.

He worked for the company 3i, for Hazlewoods, a substantial Gloucestershire based accountancy practice, for Inch's Cider Ltd in Devon, and also for Brissco Equipment Ltd in Bristol. Mr Tellwright then joined Business West as a leading Business Finance Adviser.

The other speaker at the event, organised by the University’s Business Hub, is Cambridge graduate Jill Burnett, whose high-flying business career spans 25 years in the IT industry, and who is Business West's High Growth Adviser.

Before settling in the West Country, Jill worked in Scotland and Hampshire and has held key roles in new businesses, helping to grow these to achieve substantial revenues. Her experience of the IT industry covers software products and bespoke development, product management, support, training and consultancy.

The seminar is part of the Business Hub’s Leadership and Management programme, funded by the European Social Fund. Further seminars with leading business speakers will run each month until June.

The events are open to all local business people but priority for places will be given to people from businesses with up to ten employees. To book a free place call Carole Sheppard on 01793 328772 or email her
