Library hosts a display of publications by University's Writing Coach

The Library foyer is hosting a display of science-related publications from the University’s Royal Literary Fund writing coach Trevor Day.

Trevor, who began at the University last month, is a non-fiction writer with more than 40 books and many articles to his credit, including children’s books, national newspaper features and academic review articles. Several of the displayed items are on the theme of water and its inhabitants.

Trevor is available on Mondays and Tuesdays to offer writing coaching to science or engineering & design students and staff. He is seconded to the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Office.

Trevor coaches students in planning, drafting and composing written assignments of all kinds, including reports, scientific papers and dissertations. The coaching takes place in 50-minute sessions, which are booked in advance.

Originally a marine biologist with the United Nations Development Programme, Trevor’s subsequent career has included being a science teacher, an educational consultant and a university tutor. He has also given courses in the Lifelong Learning and generic skills programmes, and is currently completing a part-time PhD in the Department of Education.

Gwen van der Velden, the University’s Director, Learning and Teaching Enhancement, said: “Trevor is already helping a number of students individually with their advanced writing. His work has been very well received and I believe that many students, and indeed staff, will be interested to learn more of the other side of Trevor's professional work.

“As a science writer he has a most approachable style of writing, encouraging both young people and adults to explore their interest in science. I am very pleased that he is sharing some of his work with us in this display.”

Trevor is available on Mondays and Tuesdays to offer one-to-one writing coaching to Science, Engineering & Design students and staff on almost any aspect of their writing. To book a free session e-mail Trevor or use the link in Related Links.
