University shortlisted for national and international new media awards

The University of Bath has been shortlisted for two national and international awards for its use of new media.

The University is one of three organisations shortlisted for the CorpComm national awards for “using new media to demonstrate our work in science, engineering and social science”.

The other finalists are the British Antarctic Survey and HBOS, and the judges’ decision will be given at a gala dinner in London on 28 November.

The University is also on a shortlist of five for the European Excellence Awards for its use of podcasts to promote its research. The other finalists are BASF; the European Commission; Heinz and the University of Oxford, and the judges’ decision will be given at a dinner in Berlin on 13 December.

In its entries, the University said that its podcasts had from November 2006 to September 2007 been seen 188,000 times by people in 50 countries. From March-June 2007 its video news items had been seen 23,711 times, equivalent to 70,000 viewings a year. These items were created entirely in-house by the Department of Marketing & Communications and BUCS Audio Visual.

“The web strategy published last year called for our website to become one of the best in the UK higher education sector in its use of new media,” said Head of Communications Tony Trueman. “The shortlisting for these awards is a sign that we’ve achieved that.”

The University was recently placed third for its use of new media in an award scheme run by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
