University student selected for national volunteering award

A student at the University of Bath has been shortlisted for a national volunteering award, in recognition of a project she set up to help homeless people in the city.

Twenty-year old Alex Nicholson-Evans, a third-year Social Sciences student from Buckinghamshire, was selected from 100 entries across England for this year’s Higher Education Academy Volunteering Awards which celebrate exemplary volunteering projects.

Her project, called LIFE 1:1, is a three-month rehabilitation programme that teaches finance and personal success skills to enable homeless people to get back on their feet.

A pilot has successfully helped one homeless man to find full-time employment and live in his own accommodation. The project will now take on four new clients in the coming months, run through Bath’s Julian House.

“We are delighted that Alex’s vision and commitment to helping homeless people has been nationally recognised,” said Anna Boneham, Volunteer Co-ordinator in the Students’ Union at the University.

“She is one of the hundreds of University students and staff who regularly volunteer to help charities and projects in the local community, and this is a great opportunity to pay tribute to their work.”

Alex also chairs the Bath Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), an international student organisation that sets up projects to create economic opportunities for others, and LIFE 1:1 is running as one of their local projects.

An Awards Lunch will take place on 7 December at Wembley Stadium, London, hosted by TV presenter Danny Wallace.
