UKOLN Member is named Professional of the Year

Brian Kelly, who works for UKOLN, the University's centre of expertise in digital information management, has been named Information Professional of the Year by Information World Review (IWR), Europe's leading newspaper for the information industry.

The award recognises Brian's outstanding contribution to the information profession. It was presented at the annual Online Information Conference in London (Tuesday 4 December).

Brian, who has worked with UKOLN for over ten years, provides advice on emerging web technologies, standards and best practices. Over the past two years his main focus has been promoting the benefits of Web 2.0, identifying potential deployment challenges and suggesting ways of addressing such barriers. This work has included a regular series of presentations throughout the country, writing briefing papers and engaging with his communities on the UK Web Focus blog.

Brian established the annual Institutional Web Management Workshop series in 1997, which attracts participants from the majority of UK University web teams and provides an opportunity for professional development. This high profile event was held at the University of Bath in 2006.

Brian also organises workshops which make use of Web 2.0 technologies to maximise the impact of the ideas discussed at the works. Most recently this included a national workshop on "Exploiting the potential of blogs & social networking' in which the plenary talks were streamed to a remote audience and were also available in Second Life.

UKOLN is a national centre of expertise in digital information management. It is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee and the Museums, Libraries & Archives Council.
