University student wins national volunteering award

A student at the University of Bath has won a national volunteering award, in recognition of a project she set up to help homeless people in the city.

Twenty-year old Alex Nicholson-Evans, a third-year Social Sciences student from Buckinghamshire, was honoured in the Higher Education Academy Volunteering Awards at a ceremony in London, held at Wembley Stadium.

Her project, called LIFE 1:1, is a three-month rehabilitation programme that teaches finance and personal success skills to enable homeless people to get back on their feet.

A pilot has successfully helped one homeless man to find full-time employment and live in his own accommodation. The project will now take on four new clients in the coming months, run through Bath’s Julian House.

“It was a real honor to have been nominated, let alone selected for this award,” said Alex, who chairs the Bath Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) which runs the project.

SIFE is an international student organisation that sets up projects to create economic opportunities for others and is one of the many volunteer schemes delivered through the Students’ Union’s Enterprise and Volunteer Centres.

“I have enjoyed every moment of developing and putting LIFE 1:1 into practice and working with such an inspiring group of people in the form of my friends and SIFE team has made it an even more rewarding experience.”

Roanne Wootten, Team Leader at Julian House, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Alex and the award is well deserved. The project has already supported one man to tap into the skills he had lost through the hardship that homelessness causes, with great success. We are hoping to expand the scheme out to four others in the New Year, which will be an exciting development.”
