Unions and University reach agreement on new pay structure

The University and three unions are pleased to announce that they have reached agreement over the implementation of the new pay structure.

Members of the unions, UCU, Amicus and Unison, have ratified the agreement that the University and their representatives reached in December. The last union to consult its members, UCU, agreed to the pay structure in a ballot whose result was announced on Monday.

Staff employed in Academic, Academic Related, Clerical, Technical and Manual & Craft grades will be assimilated to the pay structure from 1 March 2007.

All staff covered by the Pay Modernisation exercise will receive a letter informing them of their personal position by 21 February 2007, and the new pay rates will be paid in March 2007, with any arrears backdated to August 2006.

The pay agreement was signed today by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glynis Breakwell, and representatives of the three unions.

In a statement the University said: “We are very pleased that this structure has been agreed and we believe this will benefit staff.

“The agreement has been developed in partnership between the University and representatives of the three recognised trades unions. We are grateful to the union representatives for engaging in constructive and productive discussions.

“The local agreement is in line with the principles of the national framework agreement for the modernisation of pay structures, and reflects the principles of fairness, equity and greater transparency in the way staff are rewarded.”

The University’s proposals are set out in a Local Agreement. The proposals include details of the new pay structure, the new terms and conditions, the assimilation of staff to the new pay structure and the job evaluation review procedure.
