International final in reach for students

Three University of Bath students have successfully reached stage two of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2007 UK finals, bringing them one step closer to the contest’s world finals in Seoul, Korea.

To reach the UK finals, Joshua Pink, Duncan Fowler (both Mathematical Sciences) and Chris Archer (Computer Science) have created technological solutions which enable a better education for all; this year’s competition’s key theme.

Joshua Pink and Duncan Fowler are both competing in the Project Hoshimi category of the competition, a computer programming challenge where excellent coding skills and algorithmic ability are required to design a multi-player game.

Chris Archer is competing in the IT Challenge category where students are invited to develop an efficient and secure IT system, demonstrating expertise in the science of networks, databases and servers.

Their next deadline is Friday 18 May, and if they succeed in round two of the contest, held at Microsoft’s UK offices in Reading, the students will go on to represent the UK at World finals being held in Korea in August.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup is an annual competition which invites students to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
