Bath centenary celebrations launched at House of Commons reception

More than 120 University of Bath graduates and members of staff gathered for a reception at the House of Commons last week to mark the launch of events celebrating 100 years of pharmacy education in Bath.

They were welcomed by Sandra Gidley, Member of Parliament for Romsey, who graduated with a pharmacy degree from the University of Bath in 1978, and is the only pharmacy graduate in the House of Commons.

Although the University itself is only 40 years old, the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology can trace its roots back to the Bath College of Chemistry & Pharmacy (eastern corner of London Road/Cleveland Place) founded in 1907.

“This marks the start of our Bath pharmacy centenary celebrations,” said Professor Richard Guy, Head of the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

“One of our aims is to make contact with as many of the department’s 3,600 graduates as possible, in the hope that many will join us at some or all of the events organised in Bath this year.

“We are delighted that many friends and supporters of the department have already planned to come and participate in our centenary celebration events.”

The Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology is top-ranked in the UK for teaching and research.

Celebratory activities are scheduled throughout 2007, but the main focus will be from 4-7 July 2007, culminating in a Gala Dinner on the official centenary date, Saturday 7 July 2007.

The University of Bath is one of the UK's leading universities, with an international reputation for quality research and teaching. View a full list of the University's press releases: http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/
