Press Release - 16 April 2007

Tickets on sale for first cruise exclusively for UK students

Tickets have gone on sale for the first cruises designed exclusively for UK students, set up by two recent graduates from the University of Bath’s School of Management.

Ian Bishop and David Blyth, both 23, have chartered two cruise ships for up to 2,800 students to sail in October from Portsmouth to St Malo in France and from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

The cruises, costing from £70 to £95 a head, will feature events such as live acts, djs, stand-up comedy, speed dating, a cinema, a casino and on-board shopping.

The two business partners have negotiated partnerships with DFDS Seaways and Brittany Ferries for the inaugural voyages of what they call The Student Cruise. Around 1700 students have expressed interest on the Facebook website.

“A cruise ship is the perfect place to hold a large-scale student event as it has all the entertainment and hotel facilities you could ever need,” said Ian.

“As a contained area it means we can create the perfect atmosphere to cater for students – everything on board will be completely geared to their needs.”

The first cruise is from Portsmouth to St Malo, on 15 and 16 October. The Newcastle-Amsterdam cruise is from 29-31 October. Tickets are available from The Student Cruise's website (see Related Links).

The two business partners thought of the idea while studying. “Whilst completing our four-year degree in Business Administration, Ian and I realised that we wanted the challenge of starting up our own business, and The Student Cruise fits our expertise and aspirations,” said David.

“It combines our skills in event management and PR, and our offering of a completely unique student event has been received with great enthusiasm from students in the UK.”

He said the company he and Ian had set up to run the cruises, BB Events, wanted to expand to different routes and longer cruises to other countries in the next few years.

“The potential for it to grow is huge, but we are firmly focused on making sure this first year is a complete success.”
