Explore the photographic potential of Bath at the summer art school
Explore the photographic potential of Bath at the summer art school

Press Release - 04 April 2007

Get into art in Bath this summer

People in Bath and visitors to the city have the chance to go to art school this summer, in the first week-long art and design summer school run by the University of Bath.

The course will feature five arts: life and portrait studies; photography; creative sculpture in plaster and clay; botanical art; and creative textiles.

Students can specialise in a subject and dip into others in daily taster sessions. Teaching will be in small groups, led by practising professional artists and teachers of adult learners.

The Art in Bath course will run from 25-29 June at Carpenter House, the University’s city centre location. It has a specialist art room and other high quality teaching facilities, including an IT suite for digital art and design studies.

There will be three masterclasses during the week: Portraiture Demonstration: Basic Principles; Conceptual Sculpture in the Landscape; and Photography as a Personal Perception: the Work of Modern Masters.

Dr Alexander Sturgis, Director of Bath’s Holburne Museum, will give the students advice on organising their work for public display, ready for a public exhibition of their work at the end of the week.

Marie Salter, Programme Manager in the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning, said: “This is our first summer school in art and design and it gives people the chance to really focus on their subjects and enjoy the experience. The art classes will run in small groups, so students will get plenty of individual attention. The tutors are very experienced and have taught our part-time courses for many years.”

The course costs £285 which includes lunch and refreshments, some materials and a summer school dinner at a restaurant in Bath. No experience is necessary for the course.
