Press Release - 27 June 2007

Identical twins graduate with identical first class degrees

Identical twins who achieved exactly the same A-level results both graduated with first class biochemistry degrees from the University of Bath today.

Hannah and Louisa Jeffery, aged 24 and originally from Ottery St Mary in Devon, came to Bath having achieved As in biology, chemistry and maths A-levels.

As part of their degrees they went on two six-month work placements. For the first placement they worked at St Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis but for their second Hannah worked at the MRC Dunn Human Nutrition Unit and Louisa worked at the Sanger Centre, both in Cambridge.

In addition to their degree, Hannah and Louisa were both awarded the Leonard Broadbent Prize to mark their outstanding level of achievement.

“We both chose to come to the University of Bath because it offers a unique biochemistry degree that offers two six-month placements both here and abroad,” said Louisa.

Hannah said: “The course has given us very valuable experience that will be particularly useful in the next stages of our careers.”

Following a summer break, the twins will both start PhDs at the University of Birmingham.

Louisa will work in the division of immunity and infection, whilst Hannah will work in the division of cancer studies.

Amanda Harper, Director of Student Placements in the University’s Department of Biology & Biochemistry, said: ”Hannah and Louisa have done remarkably well in their time at University.

“They have worked hard in their studies and work placements, with Louisa receiving the Pfizer placements prize for high achievement.

“Throughout their course they have studied identical units, and were only ever separated by one or two per cent in their marks.

“They should be congratulated for their high level of achievement.”
