Press Release - 25 July 2007

Children’s tutor invites mums and dads back to school

A University of Bath graduate is launching a new course to give parents the skills and confidence to help their children with maths.

Jessica Hawker will teach the six-week ‘Maths for Mums and Dads’ course from her ‘schoolroom’ in Bradford-on-Avon for parents of primary school children.

Until now, Jessica’s company, Wizard Tutors, has offered coaching and tutoring to children and young people. She is turning the tables on parents because she feels that their help and support for young children is the key to avoiding problems later with more complicated maths.

Maths for Mums and Dads will focus partly on teaching maths techniques and methods, many of which are very different from parents’ schooldays, and partly on how to teach and support children with homework and learning.

Parents will explore how to help their children structure their work time and how to tackle numeracy skills like shopping and budgeting, skills which Jessica says help children to get ahead in maths.

Maths for Mums and Dads is all about empowering parents to be able to give their children a good solid foundation in maths,” said Jessica Hawker. “Getting young children to understand the basics, when their brains are like little sponges, means that you don’t have to patch up the problems later on. If a 15-year-old doesn’t know their times tables it really gets in the way of more difficult maths like algebra.

“The course will be based on the problems parents experience getting children to do their homework, or particular topics they find difficult. We’ll work out problems together, at their own pace, and help parents to avoid tearful and stroppy homework sessions.

“Even if parents found maths really hard at school, or they didn’t do well at exams, they can still achieve success on the course and with their children.”

Jessica graduated from the University of Bath in 2004 with a BSc in Biochemistry. She set up Wizard Tutors in 2005 and was recently made British Small Business Champion for the South West, in a competition run by the Federation of Small Businesses.

Maths for Mums and Dads will run one morning a week between 10am to midday for six weeks. The group will be a maximum of four parents and will take place in Jessica’s schoolroom at her home in Bradford-on-Avon.

The course costs £240 which covers course materials, a handbook, ongoing telephone support and help to set up a support group for 'graduate' parents. Fees can be paid in instalments and parents who recommend a friend will receive one free session. For more information see the Related Links section.
