Dr Catherine Sourbut leaves University to be ordained

Catherine Sourbut left the University a fortnight ago after 20 years of studying and working on campus.

She was ordained in Wells Cathedral on Sunday (1 July) at a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Taunton, which was attended by family and friends, including colleagues from the University.

Catherine first arrived at the University in 1987 as an undergraduate in the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages; during her third year abroad in 1989, she assisted in the demolition of the Berlin Wall.

She then went on to complete a Masters in Social Research in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences and a PhD focussing on the impact of German Reunification on the lives of East German women.

This was followed by some teaching in the German section of the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages and various research contracts.

For the last seven years she has been the Research Manager of the Pain Management Unit within the Department of Psychology and the School for Health.

"Everything I have done at the University has involved people and how they manage change in their lives," said Catherine. "It will all go with me into ministry and be invaluable."

Catherine is now the curate of Saltford, Corston and Newton St Loe and hopes to become involved in, among other things, chaplaincy work at Bath Spa University.
