Glen Mullineux promoted to personal chair

An academic whose work is helping make UK machinery manufacturers more efficient has been promoted to a personal chair at the University.

Glen Mullineux, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, assumed his Professorship of Design Technology earlier this month.

Professor Mullineux is part of the Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre. Along with colleagues, he has spent over twenty years researching design techniques based upon the idea of constraint modelling. This led to numerous research projects investigating the design and optimisation of manufacturing machinery.

The techniques have been applied particularly to packaging and processing machinery and their interaction with the materials and products being handled. These have enabled a range of companies to improve the capabilities of their existing machinery and create new improved equipment. Current work is focussing on handling more environmentally-friendly packaging materials.
