Everyone can learn a language at Bath

The Foreign Languages Centre provides a wide range of opportunities for language learning for staff, students and the local community.

Enrolments have started for the autumn term on both the community programme and the lunchtime programme. (Student courses will be announced separately).

Lunchtime courses (French, Italian & Spanish) are of 10 weeks duration, one class per week, from week beginning 8 October to week beginning 10 December. The emphasis in the classroom will be on communication in an encouraging and friendly atmosphere. These classes are very much mixed ability.

Community courses (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian & Spanish) run for 11 weeks: week commencing 1 October 2007 to 10 December 2007. Students will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of the language and practise a range of skills: for example, you will build up a systematic knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, develop strategies for reading and listening, and practise writing and speaking in a range of styles and contexts. In addition, you will be given a variety of learning tasks to carry out in your own time, either individually or in small groups.

Members of the public can enrol and pay online but members of staff need to fill in a form and send it into the FLC in order to get the reduced rate.

Staff who work at least 0.5 FTE are entitled to a 75 per cent discount which means 11 week courses cost £31.25 and lunchtime courses cost £13.75.
