Estates announces the beginning of 4 West reconstruction

Work has begun on the long-awaited redevelopment of 4 West. Early stages of the contract will involve further demolition work, the removal of all existing windows and the removal of asbestos from previously inaccessible areas.

The construction programme is set to complete in early summer 2009, with a target occupation date for the University of July 2009.

Bristol-based contractors, HBG Construction, won the original competitive tender for the rebuilding of 4 West in summer 2006 but the start has been subject to delays, largely driven by the need to reconcile construction costs to the University’s budget. Satisfactory resolution was reached this summer and the reconstruction process will now begin in earnest.

Commenting on this latest development, Director of Estates, Patrick Finch, said: “The process of negotiating satisfactory contract terms for the 4 West development has been protracted and difficult at times.

“However, we have a good design team and a committed contractor and we are confident that when it is completed, the new 4 West building will deliver a high quality environment for all those using it and will be a major improvement in the heart of the Claverton Down estate. It should also deliver an environmental ‘Excellent’ rating, with both carbon management and cost-in-use benefits for the University."

More detailed information about 4 West and an overall summary of recent Estates work on campus will follow shortly.
