Peter Lambert is elected President of Society for Latin American Studies

A message from European Studies & Modern Languages:

With over 500 members from around the world, SLAS is among the world's foremost academic societies for Latin American studies, and the largest in Europe. As well as publishing its own journal, the Bulletin of Latin American Research, it holds an annual international conference and an annual lecture, provides funding for numerous seminar series and conferences, and awards various travel, conference and research grants to British and Latin American students and scholars

During his two-year tenure, Peter aims to strengthen national research and teaching networks in Latin American studies and to continue to develop the international profile of the Society. He will also be working with colleagues in Bristol to promote the south west as a regional centre of Latin American research activity, and as one of the very few academics working on Paraguay, to raise the profile of the country in academic circles.

Peter is currently Spanish Section Coordinator having come to Bath in 2000 to help introduce and establish Spanish and Latin American studies at the university. From very modest beginnings, the Spanish Section now has seven members of staff and teaches Spanish and Latin American studies to over 300 students, on degree programmes including International Management and Modern Languages, Modern Languages and European Studies and Language and Politics. It was recently placed sixth in the 2008 Times League tables for Iberian Studies.
