Press Release - 05 September 2007

Local women encouraged into enterprise

Women who want to become their own boss can now get expert tuition to turn their ideas into businesses, through a new course launched by the University of Bath.

The Women into Enterprise course will start on 1 October and run until the end of June 2008, with weekly classes from 9.45am to 11.45am at Carpenter House, the University’s city centre location.

The course offers training, advice, guidance and support through a practical step-by-step approach to setting up a business.

Women into Enterprise has run at the University’s Oakfield Campus in Swindon for three years, where it has successfully helped over 200 women to start out in business, ranging from jewellery making to hypnotherapy to accounting and gardening.

Students at Bath will first focus on developing business ideas, confidence and skills, including business basics and IT. They will learn how to market their business, before finally building a full business plan ready to launch their new business.

The course will be taught by Alison Larkman, a business mentor and coach who has successfully created and run her own sports brand for 12 years. She is also a former international rower.

“Starting your own business can be a great way to do something new, fulfil a lifelong ambition or find a more flexible way of working and bringing up a family,” said Rachael Selley, Programme Manager of Professional and Community Development at the University.

“Whether you’ve got a firm business idea, or just a desire to be your own boss, the course can give you the confidence and know-how to start out on your own.

“Sometimes people find the University setting a bit daunting but the reality of the course is very down to earth. Anybody can do it. It’s a practical, supportive course where women can learn and build confidence together.”
