Press Release - 15 January 2008

Bath is the new home for experts on Latin America

A new network for people with an interest in Latin America will be officially launched in Bath next week. The Bath Latin American Network (BATLAM), which will be based at the University of Bath, will act as a platform to strengthen and develop expertise. The network’s inaugural event will take place at 2pm on Wednesday 23 January at the Claverton campus.

Created by the European Research Institute (ERI), BATLAM is a network of experts in different thematic areas united by a common interest in contemporary Latin America. There will be a particular reference to its relations with Europe and the European Union.

The network aims to establish links and contacts with NGOs, and academic and research institutions both locally and internationally. It will provide a venue for meeting and discussion between Latinamericanists in Bath and further afield.

Dr Gian Luca Gardini, BATLAM Coordinator, said: “The network aims to strengthen and coordinate expertise in Latin American issues within the University of Bath as well as to promote activities targeting Latin America that have the potential of involving the wider local community.”

Professor George Lunt, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “BATLAM is high in the University development priorities as it covers a geographical area to which the University attaches great importance.”

“The network perfectly fits the ERI strategy to strengthen the regional specialisms represented within the Institute,” added Dr Theo Papadopoulos, ERI Director.

BATLAM will be officially launched and will formally start its activities on Wednesday 23 January 2008. Everyone is welcome to attend the inaugural event where Professor Lunt will confer the title of 2008 BATLAM Honorary President to Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, son of Field Marshall Montgomery. The event will take place at 2pm in 8W 3.22 on the Claverton campus.
