Roger Pedder appointed new University Treasurer

Roger Pedder, who was Chairman of the footwear company Clarks for 13 years, is to be the next University Treasurer.

Mr Pedder took office on 1 January 2008 and has been appointed to serve for three years until 31 December 2010. He succeeds Keith Woodley, who has been the University's Treasurer for the past six years.

Mr Pedder, an economics graduate of Liverpool University, began work at Clarks as a graduate trainee, before taking up various posts in retail marketing at British Home Stores, Burton, Burmah and Ward White.

In 1989 he left Lowndes Queensway to found Pet City, an out-of-town retailer with a large range of pet products, which he sold in 1996 to the US firm PETsMART.

He rejoined Clarks in 1988 as a non-executive director, serving as Chairman between 1993 and 2006. He has since been appointed as Chairman of Ethel Austin, Bargain Booze and Spa & Salon International Ltd.

Mr Pedder, who attended Stanford Graduate School of Business as a Sloan Fellow in 1972/73, has been married to Sibella for 39 years and they have five children. They are keen travellers and own a vineyard in Western Australia.

His role is expected to take the equivalent of two days a month and is unpaid. The Treasurer exercises an overview of the University’s finances and works closely with the Director of Finance and the Vice-Chancellor.
