Storyteller to explain how books open doors and add colour to life

Local people are invited to a talk exploring the importance of the written word at a free public lecture at the University of Bath on Wednesday 8 October 2008 at 5.15pm (8 West, 1.1).

The lecture, entitled Reading for Life, will be given by founder of The Reader Magazine, Dr Jane Davis of the University of Liverpool.

In her lecture, Dr Davis will make a plea for an escape of literature from the confines of the curriculum and tell stories about the value of great books in ordinary lives.

Dr Davis left school aged 16 with only two GCSEs. For her, books have always opened doors to new worlds as she explains: “I was a moderately bright kid with loads of family problems and school seemed pretty irrelevant. I truanted a lot and started running away from home aged 12.

“I always took books with me when I ran away: they offered escape routes, doorways, windows, mental spaces, other worlds.

“Now I find myself leading an organisation which wants a bigger place in the nation's heart for books and reading.”

Later in life she returned to education, graduated with a first class degree in English and spent three years writing a PhD mapping out a series of thoughts she has been circling ever since; basically how books give us a way of holding complex and divergent truths.

Dr Davis is based at the Reader Centre, University of Liverpool, and currently directs a major social inclusion project based on shared reading.

The project, named Get Into Reading, exists to promote reading for pleasure at every level.

Admission for the lecture is free and people can just turn up on the day. Free parking is available in the West Car Park. The lecture runs from 5.15pm until 6.15pm in the lecture hall 8 West 1.1 on the Claverton campus.
