University of Bath launches unique degree in education and international development

The University of Bath’s Department of Education has launched a unique degree course that aims to help students develop the knowledge and skills to build a fairer and more sustainable world.

Starting in October 2009, Education & International Development (BA Hons) will be the first undergraduate course in the UK to focus upon the role education plays in international development.

It aims to meet the demand from young people who are increasingly becoming globally aware, interested in world events and globalisation, and want to play a part in helping to fight poverty, inequalities and injustice.

The course will also offer students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by spending a year on a work placement overseas or in the UK, helping to prepare them for an international career with aid agencies, charities, government departments and non-government organisations.

Topics taught on the course include:

The course is particularly aimed at school/college leavers studying A Levels, such as Geography, Sociology, Politics, Philosophy and the International Baccalaureate.

It is also an ideal course for adults wanting a career change or who are interested in education and international development.

Dr Harriet Marshall, who is leading the new degree, said: “There are a growing number of people interested in exploring the relationship between education and development in an international context.

“This is an innovative programme that encourages young, mature, and international students to engage with key ideas and issues such as global inequality, global citizenship and international development through an education perspective. We are very excited by the kinds of students currently applying for this course. Their personal statements convey a real passion for the field of study.”
