Press Release - 28 October 2008

University to host free course for those interested in a teaching career

The University of Bath is hosting a free three-day course which will give people with an interest in teaching a chance to find out more.

The course, named Teacher Taster, takes place from November 24 to 26 and is aimed at those considering teaching in secondary schools.

Applications are welcome from anyone with an interest in secondary teaching in the following subjects:

Under-represented groups such as those with disabilities and people from ethnic minorities are especially welcome.

Teacher Taster courses are designed to enable participants to reach a decision on Initial Teacher Training (ITT).

The course is sponsored by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), but previous applicants to ITT are not eligible to apply for the course.

The course will explore the different routes into teaching and provide an introduction to teaching and learning in schools today. It will allow participants to spend a day in school to gain firsthand experience of life in the classroom as well as offering individual support and advice on applications and interviews for entry into initial teacher training.

Teacher Taster Course organiser Katherine Raithby, from the Department of Education, said:

“The Taster Course is a great opportunity for people who want to find out more about becoming a teacher. These three days could be the first steps towards a stimulating and fulfilling career working with young people.”

Before submitting an application for the taster course, applicants are advised to visit the TDA website where there is a lot of useful information about routes into teaching and basic entry requirements.

In order to join the course, participants must obtain a registration number, either by registering with the TDA online or calling the Teaching Information Line on 0845 6000 991.

If you wish to register an interest or for further details, please contact Marie-Helene Milner on 01225 383435 or email
