Inaugural lecture: Hard cases make good mathematical laws

Geoffrey Burton will next week give his inaugural lecture as professor mathematics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences (6.15pm, Wednesday 20 February 2008).

In his lecture he will discuss why the notion of extreme points within convex shapes leads to mathematical laws governing such phenomena as a vortex in fluid.

Professor Burton has worked at the university since 1988. He was made professor of mathematics in 2004.

Admission is free but tickets must be reserved from Sheila Willmott. The lecture will take place in 2E 3.1.
