Press Release - 05 February 2008

Inaugural lecture explores emerging markets in the global economy

Professor Ania Zalewska, from the School of Management, will explore the importance of emerging stock markets in the global economy at her inaugural lecture this week (6.15pm, Wednesday 6 February 2008).

The lecture will trace the staggering growth of stock markets in emerging economies. Professor Zalewska will concentrate on a discussion of two major trends of capitalisation growth: the growth of ‘old’ emerging markets, and the creation of new emerging markets.

She will argue that the future of emerging stock markets depends on their ability to mature since there is little scope for the creation of further new stock markets. The lecture will also discuss the fragility of emerging markets and the need to stimulate good governance and regulatory frameworks.

Professor Ania Zalewska has a PhD in Mathematics from the Polish Academy of Sciences and a PhD in Economics from the London Business School. She is the current Professor of Finance at the School of Management.

Admission is free but tickets must be reserved from Mrs Sheila Willmott, contact details above.

The lecture will take place in building 2E, Lecture Theatre 3.1.
