Engineers recognised for outstanding work

Two research teams from the Department of Mechanical Engineering have picked up prestigious awards from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Professor Glen Mullineux and Dr Ben Hicks from the Innovative Design & Manufacturing Research Centre were presented with the Water Arbitration Prize for their work on simulating the behaviour of folded cartons during complex packaging operations.

Their paper on the subject is one of a series arising from a major study into understanding machine-material interaction for the improved design and operation of packaging machinery.

Drs Matthew Cole and Necip Sahinkaya and Professors Patrick Keogh and Cliff Burrows from the Centre for Power Transmission & Motion Control received the Thomas Bernard Hall Prize for their paper Wavelet domain control of rotor vibration published by the IMechE in 2006.

This is the second time that Professor Keogh and Dr Cole have received the Thomas Bernard Hall Prize, which was in 2003 for their paper Rotor vibration with auxiliary bearing contact in magnetic bearing systems.
