Press Release - 23 February 2009

Fairtrade status for University of Bath

The University of Bath is celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight (23 February to 8 March) with the announcement that it has achieved official status as a Fairtrade University.

The award is made by the Fairtrade Foundation in recognition of the University’s commitment and support to using Fairtrade products.

The University has met five Fairtrade goals, including a commitment to campaign for the cause and to ensure that Fairtrade products are available in all campus shops, cafes and restaurants and served at meetings and events hosted by the University.

The Foundation praised the University for the variety of Fairtrade items available in its outlets and was impressed by the number of unusual products stocked, such as nuts, dried fruit and honey.

Jane Loveys, Head of Accommodation and Hospitality Services who ran the Fairtrade steering group together with the Students’ Union said: “We are very proud to be known as a Fairtrade University and to link in to the City of Bath’s existing Fairtrade status.

“It makes us one of only 70 Fairtrade universities and colleges in the UK and is testament to the dedication of staff and students across the University to giving a real prominence to ethical and fair trading.”

Alex Nicholson-Evans, President of the Students’ Union, said: "Gaining Fairtrade status is an important step for us and reflects the efforts that we have made to stock a wide range of Fairtrade products and raise awareness of the Fairtrade movement amongst students.

“Our students are passionate about achieving and maintaining high ethical and environmental standards, gaining this status reflects not only our commitment to Fairtrade but also our commitment to representing and listening to our students.”

Fairtrade food, drink and handicraft stalls will run on the University Parade during Fairtrade Fortnight, as well as film evenings and a Fairtrade debate. Highlights of the Fortnight include:
