Bath students reach final of national competition

A team of students from the University of Bath reached the final of a national enterprise competition held in London. Their mentors also won the ‘University Advisors of the Year’ award.

The Bath SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team reached the finals of the national SIFE UK competition alongside the universities of Nottingham, Sheffield and Lancaster, just missing out to Nottingham in the grand final.

The team of students work with community groups providing tangible economic benefit by teaching about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, market economics, personal success skills and business ethics. This year, they have helped over 500 people, from single mothers in India, to homeless people in Bath.

Nilima Ajakumar, a member of the SIFE team, has enjoyed successes with her project, Fruit Aid. The program’s aim is to provide a rehabilitation programme for mothers who have lost their husbands to cancer in Kerala, India.

“The key skills I have gained from this project are beyond the scope of my course and have made a distinct impact on my career plans,” said Nilima Ajakumar, a third year Mathematics student.

Alexandra Nicholson-Evans, SIFE President said: “The team did a fantastic job, I’m so proud of everyone for all the work they’ve put in. For us, what really matters is the impact that we are making in the community but it was wonderful to have that work recognised by the judges and other SIFE teams alike.”

Nominated by their own students, Siobáin Hone, Student Enterprise Coordinator and Anna Bonham, Volunteer Co-ordinator, also won the prestigious Enterprise Educators UK University Adviser Award for the southern region, in recognition of the hard work and dedication that they have shown in supporting their SIFE team.

Kate Beresford of Enterprise Educators UK, one of the award judges commented: “The passion, commitment and enthusiasm that Siobáin and Anna have demonstrated throughout the last year really shone through in the team’s nomination. SIFE Bath have made a real difference in the communities in which they work and Siobáin and Anna have clearly both inspired and supported the team to achieve exceptional success this year.”
