Press Release - 16 June 2008

OBE for University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor

The University of Bath is delighted that Professor George Lunt, its Deputy Vice-Chancellor, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to higher education.

Professor Lunt said: “Although this is a personal award of which I am very proud it is also a reflection of the outstanding success of the University. It has been a pleasure to have worked with so many excellent colleagues and students during my 37 years in the University”

Professor Lunt is an internationally recognised neuroscientist. Along with many colleagues he has worked across a broad area, encompassing both human neurological diseases and fundamental studies on invertebrate nervous systems. He was Chief Editor of Journal of Neurochemistry, the highest ranked journal in its field, from 1993 to 2001

His contribution to the University of Bath and the university sector more generally, however, extends well beyond his research field. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor since 1996, he has led the University’s development of its strategic planning processes and contributed to a major expansion of its estate. He has also spearheaded numerous initiatives across the whole spectrum of the University’s activity.

Professor Lunt has had a significant role in the agenda to make universities more effective in innovation and economic regeneration through knowledge transfer and commercialisation of research outcomes. He has also been a tireless campaigner for developing effective links between UK universities and their counterparts overseas. He has long-established links in South America, particularly Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, and has been instrumental in establishing numerous exchange programmes at both the research and undergraduate level.

Professor Glynis Breakwell, the Vice-Chancellor, said: "Professor Lunt richly deserves this honour, having given outstanding service in so many ways within and beyond the University over the last 37 years."
