Stars of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ to perform at Dance Festival

A former student from the University of Bath has organised the City’s first ever dance festival. The show will feature Lilia Kopylova and Darren Bennett of Strictly Come Dancing fame. The festival will take place at various locations across Bath between 4-6 July.

The opening night will feature a Latin American party at The Pavilion (Friday 4 July, 7.30pm – 1am) and the weekend will include a showcase of the world’s finest dancing talent through workshops, taster classes and cabaret shows.

The final showpiece will feature the rare opportunity to see British National Professional Latin American Champions, Darren and Lilia, as they take to the floor to perform their full live cabaret show in the main ballroom of the Assembly Rooms (Sunday 6 July, 3pm – 5pm.)

Joining the stars of Strictly Come Dancing throughout the weekend will be; World Salsa Champions Chris Marques and Jaclyn Spencer from Cuban Groove; tap dancer Junior Laniyan’s company About Time; and Spanish dance troop, Mi Tierra Flamenca.

The festival has been set up by Dr James Whitehead, Managing Director of Viva La Dance, a company committed to furthering the opportunity for dance involvement in Bath. He and his partner, Joanna Kucia will also be performing a ballroom dance piece for the event (Saturday 5 July, 8pm.)

Dr Whitehead, who graduated from the University with a PhD in 2005 said: “The dance festival is set to become an important addition to our City’s festivals, offering an amazing line-up of shows and some of the world's leading artists.”

There will be opportunities for people of all ages to try different dance styles including Bollywood, Egyptian, Latin, Jive, Flamenco and Street, throughout the weekend.

“We are encouraging everyone to join in – there are over 25 different styles of dance to choose from.

“With the stars of Strictly Come Dancing at the show, we are anticipating a packed house. We suggest people visit the website for more information and buy their tickets from the Bath Festivals Box Office as they are selling quickly,” said Dr Whitehead.

Refreshments will be served in the Pavilion and the Assembly Rooms during the dances. Gold and silver weekend tickets cost £62/£49, tickets are also available for purchase for individual events. For more information, contact Bath Festivals Box Office 01225 463362, or see the links above.
