New PhD Studentship in computer science created thanks to Bath alumnus

A new PhD Studentship, the Ashworth Scholarship, has been created for the Department of Computer Science thanks to the generosity of University of Bath alumnus, Mike Ashworth.

Mike, who graduated in 1983 with a BSc in Economics, Computing & Statistics, lives in New York and is Head of Global Technology Infrastructure for US bank JP Morgan Chase.

The Ashworth Scholarship will begin in September 2008 and will last three years. The recipient of the scholarship will join an established research project in Bath's Media Technology Research Centre (MTRC) exploring Computer Vision Techniques for Visual Information Retrieval.

Siôn Lutley, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, said: "We are very grateful to Mike Ashworth for making this wonderful gift to create the Ashworth Scholarship.

"When he heard about the shortage of funded PhD Studentships, Mike offered to fund a new scholarship for the Department of Computer Science to enable an individual with great potential to undertake postgraduate research here in Bath."
