Press Release - 19 August 2008

University to help women entrepreneurs achieve business goals

Are you a woman looking to start your own business? The University of Bath is hosting two, free events for those looking to enrol in a series of programmes offering business skills to women. The events will be held in Carpenter House, Broad Quay, Bath (4 & 5 September 2008).

The University’s Division for Lifelong Learning is to run a course to support women who dream of starting their own businesses.

The course aims to build confidence and develop skills and knowledge in a relaxed and friendly environment. It will offer the opportunity to learn about marketing and how to identify and sell to target audiences.

Successful local business women, themselves previous students of the course, explain how they help develop self-belief and critical skills:

After attending one of the courses, Dana Mellor set up her company Bumpy Business, a career coaching consultancy specifically designed to support parents returning to work.

Another former student of the courses, Laura Campbell, launched Hands of Thyme, a massage therapy and treatment centre, in September 2004 after leaving a corporate role.

Laura explains how the network of contacts she met on the course has helped support her and grow her business: “I met a group of women who I could relate to and work with. Four of us still meet on a regular basis. The support and encouragement of this group has been invaluable.

“The sessions enabled me to put time aside on a regular basis to develop my business. I later worked with a mentor, who I still see.

“She has also become an invaluable support and friend.”

Prospective students are invited to an informal morning or evening event to find out more about the sessions, meet tutors and register for the course.

The open evening will take place on Thursday 4 September (6.30pm - 8pm), and the coffee morning will take place on Friday 5 September (11.30am - 1pm). To register your interest in these events, please see the links below, or call Rachael Selley on 01225 388590.

The events will be held at Carpenter House, Broad Quay, Bath. Light refreshments will be available, women only.
