Academic invited to join Wellcome Trust Funding Board

Professor Steve Ward has been invited to join the Wellcome Trust Physiological Sciences Funding Board, in recognition of his research in the field of inflammatory cell biology and pharmacology. The appointment runs for three years.

The Wellcome Trust is an independent charity funding research to improve human and animal health. Established in 1936 and with an endowment of around £11 billion, it is the UK's largest non-governmental source of funds for biomedical research.

Professor Ward has been working in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology at the University since 1992.

His fields of research activity are understanding the mechanisms of immune activation which contribute to the processes that drive inflammatory diseases (such as Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis) and cancer.

His research aims to identify new targets for the development of new and better anti-inflammatory drugs and involves close interactions with the pharmaceutical industry.

Professor Ward is currently the recipient of a prestigious Royal Society Industrial Fellowship, which supports his collaborative work with Novartis. His work is also supported by other grants from the Wellcome Trust and the BBSRC, and by funding from industry.

He serves as editor for several leading international scientific journals in the areas of pharmacology and immunology.
