East meets West: latest developments with Shandong University

During 2008 there has been several new developments in Bath’s partnership with Shandong University (SDU) in Jinan, China.

Student exchanges

In July our English Language Centre welcomed a group of 11 SDU students for a four-week summer programme of English language and culture.

This month it is the turn of Bath students to visit Shandong as Mona Matei (Economics) and Charlotte Wright (Physics) take part in the Study China programme which encourages UK undergraduates to spend time learning about Chinese language and culture in their summer holidays. Mona and Charlotte are keeping a diary of their trip and will be writing an article for the web about their visit to Jinan.

Staff visits

Staff have also been active. In July Professor Chris Jennison, Dean of the Faculty of Science visited research staff in the School of Mathematics and the School of Pharmacy to discuss future co-operation particularly in Clinical Pharmacy education.

The long-established link between Bath’s European Research Institute under the leadership of Dr Theo Papadopoulos and the Centre for European Studies at SDU continues to be active with a summer visit by researcher Dan Haglund to SDU to discuss further plans for joint publications, conferences and a research centre.

New dual degree students

Activity continues into the new academic year when the first new dual degree students from Shandong will arrive. Yuan Ningyi (MSc Accounting & Finance) and Qu Shuangshi (MSc Economics & Finance) will be studying for a one-year MSc in the School of Management. On completion of their Bath degree they will return to SDU for the third year of their Chinese post-graduate programme.

Professor Stephen Newman in the Department of Mechanical Engineering will also welcome Xiang Zhang from SDU for PhD studies in Manufacturing Systems made possible by a joint scholarship from the China Scholarship Council and the EPSRC.

Professor Jane Millar, PVC Research, welcomed these developments: "We renewed our partnership with the University of Shandong in 2007 and I am very pleased to see these links expanding and developing, involving both staff and students."
