University's Carpenter House affected by explosion in Bath city centre

A fire in the SouthGate development site at approximately 5pm yesterday (Tuesday) necessitated a number of buildings in the centre of Bath to be evacuated.

The emergency services also evacuated Carpenter House, including about fifty students from their residential accommodation.

Contingency arrangements were put in place immediately and the University was in regular contact with the emergency services.

We very much regret the inconvenience experienced by the students involved.

Mark Humphriss, University Secretary, said: "Thanks are due to Security Services and Accommodation & Hospitality staff who worked hard to ensure the incident was handled as smoothly as possible."

Further information about the fire can be found on the Bath Chronicle website. (See Related Links section)
